On March 8th, Griffin continued their undefeated run with a last-minute desperation backdoor push. Below is the press conference interview with Choi “Sword” Sung Won.
How do you feel about continuing your win streak?
Sword: Today’s game was really fun to play and I think that was more important than the win streak itself.
Were you nervous after losing the first game?
Sword: Not really. We didn’t get nervous or anything, we just gave constructive feedback to bounce back in game two. In the end, we did.
What points did you improve on after the second game?
Sword: I think we stepped up our aggression.
Can you tell us specifically how you stepped up your aggression?
Sword: We tweaked our composition so that our aggressive style of play could be better executed. We also actively tried to maintain an aggressive mentality throughout the game.
Urgot has been nerfed, but you still picked it. Was it cvMax’s call?
Sword: Well, we assessed that the Urgot nerfs greatly affected his lane presence in the early game. We still think that he’s a solid pick to fit in a certain team composition in the later stages of the game. It was how we played Urgot that had us struggle, not necessarily the champion itself. I think we can play Urgot again.
Can you tell us more about the final backdoor at the end of the game three?
Sword: I thought the teamfight was winnable, but we lost and thus I thought we lost the game. Then we pointed out that we had 3 Cloud drakes, so we thought that we had a chance if Evelynn could place a ward. Also, the Baron was up, and SKT ran for that and that opened a window.
You had a big smile after the final game.
Sword: Yeah. I am really thankful to my teammates.
You must be exhausted after such a close, long series.
Sword: Yes. These kinds of matches are tiring, but nevertheless, it was a really enjoyable match to play.
Have you had a similar experience to today during your career?
Sword: I’ve had similar games like this in solo queue, and also in some scrims. Today was an actual match, and it aroused excitement that I haven’t felt in either solo queue or scrims.
What are your resolutions around your next match, against SANDBOX Gaming?
Sword: I think we should be more prepared to grab a more convincing win rather than gaining confidence from today’s victory. Today’s game was way too close.
Griffin seemed to have a harder time facing SKT compared to your last encounter in round one.
Sword: We’ve always thought that SKT would be a difficult opponent when their teamwork started to sharpen up. Compared to Round 1, their teamwork got better and we made some mistakes for them to capitalize on.
Do you have any final words?
Sword: I really enjoy playing games like today’s match, but today was really, really close. I hope that we can display performances that are a joy to those watching. Today was really a breathtaking match.
